The International Center for Academic Integrity defines academic integrity as "a commitment, even in the face of adversity, to six fundamental values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, responsibility, and courage. (https://www.academicintegrity.org/)

It is hard to imagine anyone not wanting to be considered a honest, trustworthy, fair, respectful, and responsible person. These are universally accepted values of virtue. However, it is worth paying attention to the words “in the face of adversity” in this definition. Being a student is sometimes difficult. It requires persistence and determination in an environment that may not always feel supportive. Financial stress, high expectations for academic success by family, or challenges to adapting to a different academic and cultural setting are issues that many students face. It is in moments of stress that a commitment to your values matters.

Furthermore, students at SFU are expressly prohibited from any action that contravenes the standard of academic integrity, including any act of dishonesty, falsification, misrepresentation, or deception in one’s academic work. The S10.01 student academic integrity policy describes the basic responsibilities of students as well as the principles for a fair discipline process.

The purpose of this tutorial is to build your awareness of when and how academic dishonesty can occur and to introduce you to the people, resources and support available to support you in this important life goal of attaining a university degree that you have embarked on.
